🕰️ The Beginnings

In the 1950s, YO4KCA and YO4KRB belonged to the Constanța Regional Radio Club, an already functional and well-organized structure. YO4KCA was a Class I station, while YO4KRB was a Class III station. The club’s activity included:

• operating a transmitting and receiving radio station

• making international radio contacts

• training young people in telegraphy (Morse code)

The radio club had its own dedicated headquarters, where both technical and training activities took place.

📡 Development in the 1960s–1970s

In the following decades, the radio club evolved and became an active presence in both national and international amateur radio. The YO4KCA callsign appears in the results of international competitions as early as the 1960s, confirming participation in high-level radio traffic.

During this period, the club operated as the Constanța County Radio Club, having:

• its own headquarters, located in a park area

• complete radio infrastructure

• high-performance antennas, including directional antennas mounted on a tower

There are documents attesting to the activity of certain members during the 1968–1972 period, including professional radio operators, reflecting the technical level and the involvement of the local community.

⚙️ The Period of Development after 1981

An important moment in the club’s evolution came in 1981, when leadership was taken over by Radu Bratu.

In the years that followed, YO4KCA Radio Club went through a significant stage of development:

• modernization of its technical base

• equipping the club with high-performance gear and antennas

• consistent participation in national and international competitions

• organizing activities dedicated to amateur radio operators

The club thus became an important center of amateur radio in the region, both through its technical activity and its educational role.

🔄 Transformations after 1989

The changes that took place in Romania after 1989 led to the reorganization of radio clubs. In this context, “Radu Bratu” Radio Club was established in Constanța, an association that continued the activity of local amateur radio operators.

It operates under the callsign YO4KRB and brings together members of the local community, including radio amateurs who had previously been active within YO4KCA.

📻 Modern Activity

In recent years, the activity of amateur radio operators in Constanța has been carried out under the callsigns YO4KCA and YO4KRB, used in parallel in different contexts:

• participation in national and international contests

• organization of competitions, including the YO4HW Memorial

• operation of club stations and radio beacons

The YO4KRB callsign is currently officially registered and represents “Radu Bratu” Radio Club, while YO4KCA remains a symbol of Constanța’s amateur radio tradition and continues to be used in specific activities.

🧭 Continuity and Tradition

From the first documented activities in the 1950s up to the present day, amateur radio in Constanța has undergone continuous development.

The callsigns YO4KCA and YO4KRB reflect this continuity, marking the stages through which the local amateur radio community has passed:

• the organized beginnings of the radio club

• its development and consolidation as a county radio club

• modernization and performance in the 1980s

• adaptation to new conditions and the continuation of activity in the present day

Today, this tradition is carried forward by the amateur radio operators of Constanța, who preserve and build upon the legacy developed over more than seven decades.
